Staff and Parents/Guardians, As part of the Law & Public Safety program at the Academy of Careers & Technology, students will periodically be conducting security checks of the student parking lot at Woodrow Wilson High School. Students participating in the checks will be easily identified by their issued security uniforms. The purpose of these checks is to give students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with security, observation, and public safety procedures. Their presence in the parking lot will also provide an additional level of visibility and allow potential safety concerns to be reported. Students will be supervised during these checks and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner. The checks are intended to be routine and preventative and should not interfere with normal school activities. If students see something that appears unusual or raises a safety concern, they will notify the appropriate school staff member or School Resource Officer. Students will not approach, confront, or take enforcement action involving anyone in the parking lot. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we give our Law & Public Safety students an opportunity to gain real-world experience while also helping support the safety of Woodrow Wilson High School

During this evening’s football game at Woodrow Wilson High School, an adult was taken into custody by the Beckley Police Department after being found in possession of a firearm. School administrators and law enforcement responded promptly to the situation. The individual was taken into custody, and there is no known ongoing threat to students, staff, or spectators at this time. The safety and security of our students, staff, families, and community members remain our highest priority. We appreciate the swift response and assistance of the Beckley Police Department. Because this is an active law enforcement matter, any additional information regarding the individual, arrest, or charges should come from the Beckley Police Department.
